Atlantean Centaurs
Tomb Raider
The Atlantean Centaur is much rarer than either of the two other types of Atlantean creatures that Lara Croft meets. As with the others, it is shown having no skin and its muscle and bone exposed. Whether the Atlantean centaur is an original creation or the result of possible cross-breeding/genetic manipulation with another species is a subject for debate.
Because of its equine body and legs, the centaur can be a challenge to escape. It also uses fireballs to attack Lara when it cannot trample her. However it has a limited line of sight and can be used to Lara's advantage. The Atlantean Centaur is first encountered in the Tomb of Tihocan, where two rather larger specimens than later encountered guard the gate into the tomb.
Tomb Raider Anniversary
Centaurs maintain their status as rarer and more difficult beasts to manage than in the original Tomb Raider although Lara's general adaptability and more athletic movement makes them less of a challenge. Aesthetically they appear different to other Atlanteans in that they have a mechanical aspect to their faces and human torso and also appear to possess skin. Perhaps this is to elevate their status above normal Atlanteans.
Their faces are more equine than those in the original, and they also make a neighing sound when first seen in the Tomb of Tihocan. The two centaurs that guard the gate to the tomb can be said to be even more important than those seen later in the game, as they wear helmets, armour and carry shields, but no weapons. As well as being able to shoot fireballs at Lara, they also have the power of petrification. They attempt to turn Lara into stone with this power, but in a reflection of the Medusa myth, Lara can use their shields to turn the tables.
