Backpack

Lara's backpack is one of her signature accessories. It is part of her necessary equipment, and she is rarely seen without it. The backpack can be said to be "bottomless", in that it can (in most of the games) store any amount of items, even ones that are bigger than it.

The Backpack through the Ages

Lara has been carrying a brown backpack since Tomb Raider. She uses it to store all the guns, ammunition, medipacks, and artefacts that she picks up (except certain large guns like the shotgun, which is usually seen slung across the backpack).

The backpack even acquires a history of its own in the flashback section Tomb Raider The Last Revelation, where a teenage Lara yanks the backpack from a skeleton's hands in Cambodia.

At the end of The Last Revelation, Lara is trapped inside a pyramid and feared dead. The next game, [Tomb Raider Chronicles]] has a running storyline in which Werner Von Croy digs under the pyramid in an attempt to find Lara. At the end of the game, his crew finds her backpack - which Von Croy takes as a sign that Lara is still alive.

In Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness, the backpack is torn off Lara's back by the police dogs chasing her as she rushes from the scene of Von Croy's murder. Many interpret this as a sign of a break with Lara's past. However, Lara re-acquires a backpack - perhaps a new one - about a third of the way into the game.

In Tomb Raider: Legend, Lara's backpack is no longer brown or "bottomless" - i.e., there is a limit to the number of guns, ammo and medipacks she can carry. This change found very little favour with the fans, so in the next game, Tomb Raider: Anniversary, the brown and bottomless backpack was back - though there was still a limit on the amount of ammo Lara could carry.
