Bats
Throughout her journeys Lara Croft meets various species of bat - understandable given her preference for exploring abandoned ruins and locales. Bats have not always been a constant presence though - they appear intermittently throughout the games.

Tomb Raider
Bats are the first enemies that Lara faces in the original Tomb Raider game. They are usually encountered on their own or in groups of up to five or six. They are fairly small, roughly the size perhaps of Lara's head. They emit sharp squeaks and generally attack Lara's back. Primarily concentrated in the Peru levels, they are also found in St Francis' Folly and the Colosseum.
Tomb Raider III
Bats appear briefly as an environmental addition in Madubu Gorge, where at the beginning of the level a flock appear from a stone structure when Lara approaches it. Bats do also appear a number of times in The Lost Artifact on the Highland Fling level.
The Last Revelation
Bats appear again much as they did in Tomb Raider. They are of a similar shape, size and appearance and also appear in small groups, usually no more than two or three individuals. They are encountered in various different levels across the game.
Tomb Raider Chronicles
In this game, bats return to the status of a hazard that must be outrun - similar to the piranha of Tomb Raider III. They occur as large flocks and fly around Lara biting her for a short time, or unless she runs out of reach. They are found in both the Rome and the Ireland levels.
The Angel of Darkness
Bats again appear in the form that they are seen in both Tomb Raider and The Last Revelation. They are only seen briefly in the levels underneath the Louvre. There are two kinds of bats - one is strictly ornamental and cannot attack or be attacked, the other will attack Lara if not dealt with.
Tomb Raider Anniversary
In the remake of the original Tomb Raider, Bats are seen again in the same levels. Their physical appearance is completely different however. Their bodies are slightly larger than in the original, and their wings are much larger then their original Tomb Raider counterparts.
Tomb Raider Underworld
Bats appear mainly in the Thailand area of the game. Although they are a single individuals, often many are encountered together so that Lara must be on her guard. They can knock her from precarious footholds.
