The gargantuan structures of the Alexandrian catacombs.

The Catacombs stretch under most of the Coastal Ruins area. They are styled in both late Pharaonic hieroglyphs, and Hellenistic and Roman paintings and decoration.

Summary

The entrance to the catacombs must be opened with a set of keys found in a tourist trap in the Coastal Ruins. A large squarish block must be moved onto a switch, whereupon a door covered in Greek writing will open in the wall.

After a brief encounter with an Air Elemental, Lara can slide down into the main hall of the Catacombs - a long rectangular chamber with an entrance to the west leading to the Temple of Poseidon. To the north and south are further catacomb halls.

Within the catacombs Lara must collect four tridents to use in the temple. These are scattered throughout the north and south catacombs. To the south is a three levelled chamber, the floors now collapsed so long falls are always a concern.

To the north is a large flooded room full of ledges, no doubt because to the north is the Mediterranean Sea. Lara must manipulate levers to reveal further ledges around the room and proceed. From here there are some high ceilinged rooms full of skeletons which guard the tridents that must be collected.

Finally, Lara must make her way back to the central hall, and proceed up the steps to the Temple of Poseidon.

Notes

The Catacombs are probably based on the real Kom el Shoqfa Catacombs of Alexandria (Kom el Shoqfa meaning 'mountain of shards'). These catacombs are also built on several levels and include Egyptian, Greek and Roman designs.
