Dobermanns are a breed of dog originating in Germany. The breed was created in 1890 by a Karl Friedrich Doberman ('dobermann' is an alternative spelling, both forms are correct). Dobermanns are commonly thought of as being guard, police or attack dogs, although these practices are less common today.

These dogs are quite large and usually coloured black and tan. They are fast runners and are very physically active dogs. In reality they are generally loyal and gentle pets, but in the Tomb Raider Series they are portrayed as being vicious guard dogs.

History

Dobermanns reputation as vicious dates back to herr Doberman's days. Dobermanns were originally breeded to protect tax collector and taxes that they had collected. Dobermanns were and are also great guard and police dogs, but as mentioned earlier on, they are also loyal and gentle pets when trained correctly.

In Tomb Raider Series

Dobermanns appear twice in the Tomb Raider Series; guarding the Venice levels of Tomb Raider II and appearing in the Streets Of Rome area of the Rome levels of Tomb Raider Chronicles.

In Tomb Raider: The Angel Of Darkness, Louis Bouchard's Doorman claims to have a Dobermann Pinscher behind the gate he is guarding, however, the dog found guarding St. Aicard's Graveyard has the appearance of a Rottweiler.
