Appearances

Jean-Yves appeared alongside Lara Croft in The Last Revelation.

He is a French archaeologist who appears to have various digsites across Egypt, most notably in the Valley of the Kings and Alexandria. He appears to have an intimate knowledge of Ancient Egyptian mythology and culture, and can also read Ancient Hebrew.

Legal Wrangles

"Eidos Interactive, the London based publishers behind the phenomenally successful Tomb Raider series, have issued a statement publicly apologizing to a French archaeologist who was apparently resembled in Tomb Raider 4 - The Last Revelation.

Jean-Yves Empereur, famed for his discovery of the Pharos Lighthouse - one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World - near the Egyptian city of Alexandra, said the character Jean Yves, which appeared alongside video-game heroine Lara Croft in Tomb Raider 4, resembled himself in both profession and name.

The statement, published in the French daily Le Monde, quotes Eidos Interactive Ltd as saying that any resemblance to Jean Yves Empereur was purely coincidental, and that although The Last Revelation will continue to sell in its current state for technical reasons, no such character would appear in forthcoming Tomb Raider titles." Despite this, some beta versions of Tomb Raider: Chronicles feature Jean-Yves instead of Charles Kane, the character that would replace Jean-Yves in the game.
