Tomb Raider - Tomb Raider Anniversary
Current Status : Dead
This is a very unique Atlantean which was created by Natla. It may be have been created when Natla somehow collected some DNA from Lara (possibly from a hair sample) and combined it with the DNA of an Atlantean, therefore explaining why the Doppelganger can anticipate Lara's next move.
The Doppelganger (also known affectionately as 'Bacon Lara') is an exact copy of Lara's physicality but without skin. In Tomb Raider, the doppelganger also has extremely large eyes. Anniversary's version is a far more realistic interpretation.
This Atlantean is perfectly harmless and yet dangerous at the same time. In addition to matching Lara's moves perfectly, the doppelganger can also shoot when she shoots, firing bright balls of fire rather than bullets. In matching Lara's moves Lara can outwit and kill the Doppelganger in order to progress further in the level.
Disturbingly enough, in Anniversary when the Doppelganger dies it screams as if it realises that it's death is forthcoming. This furthers the idea that the Doppelganger is not merely a clone but also a conscious being. The science by which it matches Lara's moves and instincts is unknown.
The Doppelganger is also an unlockable costume in Tomb Raider Anniversary (complete with fleshy sounding footsteps).
A similar situation is experienced in the Cleopatra's Palaces level of The Last Revelation, where Lara comes across a golden statue of herself which when it takes damage damages Lara herself.
Tomb Raider Underworld
Current Status : Alive
Lara comes across a much more advanced Doppelganger in Tomb Raider Underworld. She has skin and clothes, and differs from Lara only in her hair colour, paler, veiny skin and wears her hair in the classic Tomb Raider plait. She also demonstrates independant thought in that while she can mimic Lara's movement perfectly, she can also predict and thwart Lara's attempts to kill her. She is also silent.
The Doppelganger ends up falling into a pool of Eitr in Helheim, after attacking Lara.
She has been christened 'Doppelhoe' by members on Tomb Raider Forums.
Quotes
(to badly injured Natla): I like your new look.
(to Lara): Obsession and compulsion are much the same. Either way we are, neither of us, our own masters.
Lara's Shadow
Doppelganger appears as a playable character in the second extension to Tomb Raider: Underworld - 'Lara's Shadow'. As shown in the opening cutscene of the extension, she did not fall into the pool of Eitr and although she hit the ground falling very hard, she did not suffer from any injury.
