Timeline
For hundreds and thousands of years prior to the Great Deluge, the Nephilim bloodline continued in secret.
Towards the 1300's, their numbers had grown thin. Admitting that they needed help to survive, the remaining Nephilim turned to Pieter Van Eckhardt to revive their fallen race. They told him that their numbers had been hidden away in an ark, and that if he was to revive them, then he would be granted immortality. In 1442 the remaining Nephilim discovered Eckhardt was going to double cross them, and they used the Lux Veritatis to defeat and imprison him.
The Nephilim had woven themselves throughout history; Joachim Karel being the last surviving being. It's suggested that in a bid to get rid of humans, Karel introduced the Plague - also known as The Black Death.
After Eckhardt had escaped in 1945, Karel kept a close eye on The Black Alchemist and even infiltrated Eckhardt's secret society known as the Cabal.
In 2003 when Eckhardt gained all he needed to revive the 'last remaining Nephilim' known as The Sleeper, Karel killed him knowing he was no longer needed. Karel intended to continue the task himself, without risk of being double crossed.
Lara Croft halted these plans however, by attacking The Sleeper with Eckhardt's Sanglyph weapon. The Sleeper exploded, and Karel was caught in the blast.
According to the plot of the discontinued 'Angel of Darkness 2', Karel survived this explosion and went on to attempt the revival of the Nephilim himself.
Appearance
The Nephilim are shape-shifters. In their natural form however, they are human-like in appearance.
Something common to all Nephilim in Tomb Raider is the tattoo-like engravings on their skin. Both Joachim Karel and The Sleeper display markings on their bodies - although it's never revealed what these symbols are, or what they represent.
Abilities
Neither Karel nor the Sleeper possess wings, and yet Karel is able to levitate.
Towards the end of The Angel of Darkness, Karel reveals his ability to shoot bolts of green energy from his hands as a supernatural weapon - as well as his ability to shape-shift.
