Ruled by Hel
Niflheim was ruled by Hel, the daughter of Jotuns Loki and Angrboda. Loki and Angrboda had two other children too: Jormungand, the Midgard Serpent, and the Fenrir Wolf. Hel became the ruler of the dead when Odin threw her down to Niflheim. Half of Hel was light colored and the other half dark.
In Viking times "Go to Hel" meant "to die". Since Hel's kingdom was such a grim and dark place, it can be speculated that one less-friendly phrase of our days has some kind of roots with Hel.
Home of the Dead
Anyone, who died due to old age or disease, was sent to Niflheim, The World of Mist. It was the lowest world of all nine and was guarded by the appalling dog named Garm. At Ragnarök Garm and the god named Tyr killed each other.
Existed before world
In Norse mythology, Niflheim was the mist world in far north, consisting of ice, frost and fog. It was said to be existing before the dawn of time and before the world was created.
