Sony

PlayStation

The PlayStation is a 32-bit CD-Rom based console first appeared in 1994. Unlike other game consoles which have letters to identify the buttons on the controller, the PlayStation features four different shapes: A blue cross, a red circle, a green triangle and a pink square. It also features four shoulder buttons (named L1, L2, R1 and R2). Due to an agreement between Eidos and Sony, the first two sequels of the original game were console exclusives of the PlayStation, because of that, the Tomb Raider Series became an icon of that console.

Sony Playstation 2

PlayStation 2

In 2000, Sony released the PlayStation 2 (PS2), which became an instant hit. It was also one of the very first game consoles to use DVD discs instead of the more traditional Compact Disc (CD) for games, allowing for bigger, better looking games. The PS2 has sold over 120 million units to date.

PlayStation Portable

The PlayStation Portable (PSP) is Sony's second handled console (the PocketStation peripheral being the first) released in 2004. It features a widescreen display, multi-media capabilities, detailed 3D and a basic internet browser. It has sold over 37 million units worldwide.

PlayStation 3

The PlayStation 3 (PS3) is Sony's third major PlayStation console released in 2006/2007. Unlike it predecessors, the PS3 features a unified online gaming service called PlayStation Network, and a motion-sensing controller called "SIXAXIS", a hard disk and high definition capabilities.

Sega

Sega Saturn

The Sega Saturn, released in 1995 is Sega's attempt to compete with Sony and Nintendo. The first Tomb Raider game was originally designed for this console, but the PlayStation version became more successful. A Tomb Raider II version for Sega Saturn was in development, but scrapped due to technical reasons.

Dreamcast

The Dreamcast is Sega's last video game console released in 1999. It's considered a pioneer in online gaming. Sega tried to recapture part of the market lossed with the PlayStation but it failed to to gather enough atention to compete with the PlayStation 2. It was later discontinued in 2001.

Nintendo

Game Boy Color

The Game Boy Color (GB), released in 1998, is a succesor to Nintendo's handled console, the Game Boy. It features a 32, 768 color palette (although the screen can only project 56 colors at the same time) in its 160x144 screen.

Game Boy Advance

Released in 2001, the Game Boy Advance (GBA) is Nintendo's third major handled console. With its 32-bits CPU, it offers a similar power to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and has full backwards compatibility with the Game Boy and Game Boy Color games.

Nintendo GameCube

The Nintendo GameCube (NGC) is Nintendo's fourth home game console released in 2001. Is the first Nintendo console to use discs (called GameCube optical discs) instead of ROM cartridges as a storage method. It's slightly powerful than Sony's PlayStation 2, althogh it's optical discs have a capacity of 1.5GB and the DVD discs, 4.5GB. After the succes of Lego Star Wars, Eidos decied to port Tomb Raider: Legend to the GameCube.

Nintendo DS

Released in 2004, the Nintendo DS (NDS or just DS) is the succesor to the Game Boy Advance handled console. It has two separate screens, with the bottom one having touchscreen capabilities. The Nintendo DS also have a built-in microphone, and has four buttons (the GBA has only two) named A, B, X and Y and two shoulder buttons named L and R, and a D-Pad.

Wii

The Wii is Nintendo's most recent console, released in 2006. Although it's graphic power is notably lower than the PlayStation 3' and the Xbox 360', it is contrasted by a unique motion sensitive controller called Wii Remote; wich can be used as a 3D motion detector or as a pointing device and it is bundled with a Nunchuck, an analog stick with two trigger buttons and a accelerometer.

Microsoft

Microsoft's Xbox with a controller.

Xbox

The Xbox is Microsoft's first video game console released in 2001. Is the first console to incorporate built-in hard drive and native online gaming support called Xbox Live, is also the first console with media center and some high definition capabilities. It often seen as a "spiritual successor" of sorts of the Dreamcast, and adopted several Sega franchises like Dead or Alive or Shenmue.

Xbox 360

After discontinuing the Xbox, Microsoft released in 2005 the Xbox 360, the first home console of the seventh generation of video game consoles. Unlike the PlayStation 3, which games are available in 25GB Blu-ray discs, the Xbox 360 use dual-layered DVD discs with just 9GB of capacity. It's quantity and quality of it's game library is considered bigger than the PlayStation 3 and Wii ones. Like the original Xbox, the 360 features a hard drive (only this time it isn't built-in) and support for the online service Xbox Live.

Games for Windows

Games for Windows is Microsoft's gaming platform for PC games. Games for Windows aims to make gaming on Windows easy and accesible. All the games must meet certain requirements regulated by Microsoft, such as: Easy install, compatibility with the Games Explorer of Windows Vista, regular and widescreen resolution and 64-bit versions of the Windows Vista operaing system support .
