Lara in The Race for the Iris

Race For The Iris is the second level of The Last Revelation, and the second and last one of the Cambodia flashback section.

This level is actually made up of two completely separate paths that meet up only in the last room of this level. The path you follow is determined by whether you found all the secrets in the previous level, Angkor Wat. If you didn't, then Von Croy leads you down the "virtuous path" in the last segment of Angkor Wat, and you get a shorter and easier race in Race For The Iris. But if you found all the secrets, you go down the "heretical path" - and a longer and harder race in this level.

Summary

Both paths begin with a cutscene, with Von Croy challenging Lara to a race to the prize - i.e., the Iris - in order to teach her about the "craving to win". Both paths involve plenty of running and jumping, but in the harder race, Von Croy actively works against you, by closing doors, cutting down bridges, etc., so that if you are too slow, you have to hunt for alternative paths.

Both races end with a variation of the same cutscene, depending on whether or not you beat Von Croy to the Iris chamber. In the cutscene, Von Croy attempts to remove the Iris from its pedestal, against Lara's waning not to do so, which results in him getting trapped, as the temple starts collapsing around them. Lara tries to help, but then finally has to leave Von Croy behind as she makes it out of the collapsing temple in the nick of time. This incident forms the basis for Von Croy's motivation in the rest of the game.
