Rats

Similar to bats, rats are an inevitable presence in many Tomb Raider games because of Lara Croft's love for exploring abandoned ruins and ancient locales. They appear in many urban and historical settings and in various different shapes and sizes.

Tomb Raider

Rats are first encountered in the Palace Midas, where Lara will observe them swimming. Later she will meet them in the Cistern and will not encounter them again after the Tomb of Tihocan. They are rather larger than rats in reality, and have red eyes. They don't appear in groups of more than one or two. While easy to kill from an ammunition perspective, they can be tenacious and difficult to deal with if they corner you. They are also aquatic, and while they cannot dive will attack Lara when she returns to the surface for air.

Tomb Raider II

Rats appear briefly in the Venice levels of Tomb Raider II. They are smaller and faster than their previous incarnations, but just as easy to kill with Dual Pistols. They are not aquatic and so do not swim. They inhabit nooks and crannies close to the canals or flooded areas of Bartoli's Hideout and the Opera House.

Tomb Raider III

Rats only appear in the London levels of Tomb Raider III. They are first encountered in a deserted warehouse in Thames Wharf. They are larger than those in Tomb Raider II, but still very easy to deal with.

Tomb Raider Chronicles

Rats are given the status of a hazard in Chronicles, as swarms of them will attack Lara's feet throughout the Rome and Ireland levels. They must be outrun as they cannot be shot or otherwise dispersed.

The Angel of Darkness

Rats are seen briefly in the tunnels underneath the Parisian Ghetto, but are not seen anywhere else. They seem to have an ambivalent attitude to Lara, as some will attack her but others will not. They are of a realistic size and appearance.

Tomb Raider Anniversary

Rats appear rather earlier than in the original game, first being seen in St Francis' Folly. They are also seen right up until the Sanctuary of the Scion, where they are found in large numbers inside the Sphinx structure. Contrasting with the appearance of the bats in the game, Anniversary rats appear to be fairly realistically designed. They are very easy to dispose of.
