= Rome - Italy

History: Rome is the current capital of italy, and has been since the many states of Italy were reunified into the country we know today in the late 19th century. Rome was made famous originally for it's massive army, and many famous emperors such as Nero, Claudius, Augustus and Julius Caeser. It is true to say that at least half of the entire continent of Europe has at some point been conquered and owned by the Romans.

Places and People: Rome has numerous famous landmarks, including those of the Colusseum, the Vatican, and it's well-preserved ruins of the ancient Roman forum. The Pope is the most famous resident of the city, living within the walls of the Vatican and appearing to people in St Peters Cathedral.

Myths and Legends: Roman mythology is largely denominated from the Greek, which they took on when they conquered the country and it's islands. A rough guide to the gods is this: Jupiter - Chief of the gods. Equivalent greek = Zeus Mars - God of war. Equivalent greek = Ares Mercury - Messenger god, son of Jupiter. Equivalent greek = Hermes Neptune - God of ships and seas. Equvalent greek = Poseiden Venus - Goddess of love. Equivalent greek = Aphrodite Minerva - Goddess of wisdom and war. Equivalent greek = Athene (Gods which names in roman I do not know are Artemis, Apollo, Hera, Persephone and Hades in Greek - feel free to add these in to the list above if you know them!) The Romans also had many monsters which they both feared and revered, such as the furies or erynies (three dog-headed bats who hounded those that did wrong), cerberus (a large dog who guarded hades) and the sirens, who lived on islands and lured sailors onto the treacherous rocks there.

In Tomb Raider: Lara visited Rome in Tomb Raider Chronicles, in which he opening FMV showed lara stealing an artefact from Pierre Dupont in a Roman Opera house. She then went on to explore roman city streets, and also trajans markets. Trajans Markets were built by the Roman emperor Trajan, and their ruins can still be seen today as part of the old Roman Forum. The ruins bear a remarkable resemblance to their appearance ingame, although the game designers were - at the time - unable to recreate the curved walls of the markets, and settled for straight streets. The final level in this hub showed Lara battling stone gladiators and lions in the ancient Colusseum, which is remarkably well preserved and can be entered and looked around today. Lara also visits Rome in Tomb Raider: The Prophecy for Game Boy Advance, although there are no areas here which bear any phisical relation to places still existing in Rome.
