The Base

The first of the Russian levels in Tomb Raider: Chronicles. The level begins with Lara and Jean Yves surveying a Russian military base on the coast of the Arctic Sea. A flashback reveals that during the second World War, a German U-boat containing the legendary Spear of Destiny was sunk in the Arctic, and the Russians are now set on retrieving it for their own use. Guarded by ex-KGB, the base is a fortress that Lara seems all too eager to breach.

The level itself involves sneaking through the base, avoiding guards and their attack dogs, and even a control-room operator wielding a giant mechanical lifting claw. The level ends with Lara's entrance on board a Russian submarine and the revelation that the Russians are divided into two camps themselves: one under Admiral Yarofev of the Russian navy, the other under Sergei Mikhailov of the Russian mafia.
