Main Information
On June 6th, 2006, a trailer was discovered that appeared to show a reworked version of the original 1996 game, Tomb Raider.
The trailer bore the heading 'Cancelled Tomb Raider Anniversary Edition Trailer', and stated the game was in production for the Playstation Portable (PSP) by the original developers Core Design.
On June 15th, Core Design revealed that the project had indeed been cancelled, and publishers Eidos Interactive announced that new developers Crystal Dynamics would be leading the project for release in Summer 2007.
About The Game
Tomb Raider Anniversary Edition was a remake of the 1996 title Tomb Raider. It was going to be released in Autumn of 2006, and was a celebration of Tomb Raider and Lara Croft’s 10th anniversary.
The developers have stated that it would've been their wish for previous Tomb Raider voice actress Jonell Elliot to star as Lara Croft once more.
Nathan McCree, composer of the original Tomb Raider soundtrack was allegedly lined up to recreate the score for Anniversary Edition.
In 2007 it was revealed that Core Design had planned to incorporate a multiplayer co-operative mode as an extra feature - a first in the Tomb Raider series. For this purpose, a new optional playable character was created: Lara Croft's cousin 'Melissa Croft'.
A new final level was planned, with Lara battling against an Atlantean War Machine as she attempted to escape the Great Pyramid of Atlantis. This level was originally intended to feature in the 1996 game, but due to time restrictions it was left out.
Also, dual-aiming, a feature that was planned for the original Tomb Raider but didn't make it into the final version, was going to be present in Anniversary Edition.
Each cutscene was to be recreated with the in-game graphics engine, as opposed to the CGI cutscenes from the original game. However, the original 1996 cutscenes were to be included as an extra bonus unlockable.
Development
Core Design were developing the game. Initially the concept arose during the development of their title Free Running. Developers decided to remake the original Tomb Raider game with modern graphics, with the Playstation Portable in mind. But Core Design was sold to Rebellion Developments before it was finished, and as Eidos and Crystal Dynamics own Tomb Raider. Core Design can not longer legally produce Tomb Raider games.
Platforms
The unofficially released trailer stated the game was for the Playstation Portable. However developers from Core Design have since revealed that Playstation2 and PC builds were also in development.
