Lara in the Tomb of Seth.

Summary

An FMV shows two figures on camels travelling through the desert. They stop at a rocky outcrop, and as one of them dismounts we can see it is a woman. She and her local guide investigate the area, and she manages to dislodge a stone alerting a large swarm of black scorpions. Her guide calls her back as she runs from them, and they see that a large stone visage is lodged in the desert sand. The woman reaches out and presses a button in the middle of the forehead of the statue - this triggers an ancient mechanism (or perhaps seismic activity) that collapses the outcrop and sends the woman and her guide sliding down various passages and tunnels.

When she lands in a dark isolated area of the tomb, the woman takes off her protective desert wear. Underneath we see a familiar outfit - Lara Croft in blue top, khaki shorts and hiking boots. It's time for a new adventure.

The Tomb of Seth has been carefully cut out of sandstone caves that may very well have been already present by the time of the tomb's construction. Various wild desert animals have made their homes here, but Lara and her guide Ahmed can navigated them with ease, with Ahmed lighting the way using a torch.

The first real sign of human artifice comes in the shape of a gatehouse of a sort - a large sealed entrance to the tomb must be opened to progress further. This can be achieved by using various mechanical switches around the room, and Lara must also go deeper underground to find one piece of the Eye of Horus. With the gate open, Lara and her guide can travel to a new cave in green stone, where Ahmed can disable another trap that spells certain death for Lara involving slicing blades from the ceiling and walls. In this room, with representations of the bull god Apis, she can find another piece of the Eye of Horus, and use it to enter the main tomb chamber.

The approach to the tomb is made by a grand staircase which leads to a large carven face on the opposite wall. Situated around this are various chambers in which puzzles must be solved to remove the piles of sand which obscure the entrance. Lara must first obtain the Timeless Sands and use it to this end. Once this is done, the sand is removed into another chamber, and a passageway is revealed in the mouth of the carven head to the Burial Chambers.

Notes

The Tomb of Seth is entirely fictional, and does not correspond to Egyptian myth at all. The Valley of the Kings is of course a location in reality.
