"Underpus" as shown in the first image of the Mediterranean Sea level

The Tomb Raider game, Underworld, features a Mediterranean level with a Kraken that Lara must overcome in order to progress. As Lara was navigating the tunnels, it rose up from the ground, blocking the way through. In order to defeat the beast, Lara had to release the spiked platform above it, killing the Kraken and freeing the door.

On the Tomb Raider Forums, this animal has been dubbed "Underpus" (Underworld and octopus) and many spoofs have been made in which images of the Underpus are edited for comical effect.

"Underpus" is fast becoming a celebrity in its own right and the name is used both at Eidos Interactive and Crystal Dynamics when discussing the level and anything to do with the area. A direct quote from Eric Lindstrom, Creative Director of Tomb Raider: Underworld regarding the Underpus thread on Tomb Raider Forums:

"I knew they [the TRF community] were calling it Underpus -- which is great! -- but I hadn't seen this thread. Awesome pictures. Then Rivendell posted that he heard from Crystal that we called it Clyde. Never heard of that.

We've bounced around a lot of silly names here but none of them stuck, and I like Underpus better than them all. Very cool."
